Flowers & Food, No.10 in our series #romancingthehome

This weeks challenge was to incorporate flowers in food…

Immediately I thought to include my Aunty Winnie’s homemade Turkish delight.

We made a huge batch for my 40th and all my friends have been asking how we made it so here goes:

30grm gelatine

lemon juice from 1 lemon

450grm sugar

12 drops rose essence

1 teacup of  water

A tiny drop of pink food colouring

Soak gelatine, lemon juice and water

Add sugar and boil for 1 minute

Add rose essence and food colouring

pour into a small deep oven dish and allow to set

Using a sharp knife cut into squares

To store, mix equal parts cornflour and icing sugar and coat Turkish delight.

Store in a cool dry area in a sealed tin

…It could not be easier

Little Tip: I have used this Turkish Delight in cakes, G&T’s and plated up for a tea time treat.

When #romancingthehome  began and all the wonderfully creative ideas came up, I thought the best part will be to enjoy quality time with my family. To set time aside to do the simple sweet things in life that we never have time to do.

Luna loves to bake with me so I called on Talia from My Shabby Shack for a quick and easy biscuit recipe.  I added a few lavender flowers to the dough and lemon glaze to finish them off.

1 cup Butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp baking powder

3 cups flour

1 tsp lavender flowers

preheat over to 180 deg (375 f)

Cream butter and sugar beat in egg and vanilla

Add baking powder to four and sieve together.

Mix wet ingredients one cup at a time

Add lavender flowers

Roll dough out to about 1cm thick (1/2 inch) and cut

Place on greaseproof paper

Back for 8-12 minutes until golden brown

Talia Top tips:

  • dust cookie cutters in flour so they don’t stick to the dough
  • Chill rolling pin in freezer
  • use straw for holes for tree decor
